SMEs and Productivity Tools

I recently caught up with a group of friends who have started a software development start-up. They have been working as freelancers and recently, they got a couple of projects and have a small team now. One of their project was a software for managing contract employees built for a company which deals with a lot of contract employees. Now they want to productize it and sell it as a SAS offering to other similar companies.

Selling productivity tools to Indian Small-Scale industry is an uphill task. If you want to build any software tool for SME, do it if your answer is yes to one of following two questions –

  1. Does your tool help the business get more business
  2. Does your tool help alleviate owner’s fears – statutory compliance fears, cybersecurity fear, data theft fear

Any other tool, such as productivity improvement etc., you would have to invest a lot of money in educating this segment with effective branding. A tall order, if you are not funded well.
